Stepping Out of Misery
3 min read · by Mystic Maya 🌻
Misery convinces you of one lie above all others: that it is permanent, and that it is you. “I am miserable,” we say — as if the sadness and the self were the same thing. But you are not your misery. You are the awareness in which the misery appears, the way the sky is not the storm passing through it.
That single shift — from being the feeling to watching the feeling — is the first step out. The next time heaviness settles over you, try not to push it away, and not to drown in it. Just notice it: “There is sadness here.” In that small gap between you and the emotion, a little air gets in. And where there is air, there is a way out.
Then be tender with yourself, almost absurdly so. Love yourself a little more, and a little more, and a little more. Misery feeds on the harshness we turn on ourselves; it starves on kindness. Speak to yourself the way you would speak to a frightened friend.
Move your body, even gently. Step outside. Put on some music and let the rhythm carry you for three minutes. Read something that lifts you. Misery hates motion and light — it prefers a still, dark, shrinking life. So give it the opposite.
And remember what all of this is for. Life is not a problem to be solved or a grade to be earned — it is an experience to be lived. You came here to taste it fully, the bitter and the sweet. You step out of misery not by fighting it, but by gently turning back toward the life that is still here, waiting, in this very moment.
